As a consequence of her anger she was put on a prison anger management course, which she found helpful. In fact, Bella was one of the few mothers who portrayed a sense that those working in the prison actively tried to help her. For example, when she was incarcerated, her daughter was heavily pregnant and often had evening ante-natal scans when the women were unable to make phone calls. Some of the prison officers would call her daughter for her to check the scans were normal. Bella said this really calmed her down during these potentially worrisome evenings; however, despite having no previous concerns with mental health, she still reported significant issues with depression in prison:

I cried nearly every day … I cried through every lesson, they had to keep pulling me out (of education) … every day was a struggle, I’d just get up and I’d cry and I’d cry, that’s just how hard it was for me.

(Bella, four months follow-up post-prison)
